View serviceCommon cooker hood problems
Most hood problems come down to grease in the wrong place. Here are the ones we see most often and the service that fixes each.
Cooker hood not extracting steam
Blocked grease filters are the most common cause, followed by a fan impeller coated in grease. A full cooker hood clean usually brings the suction back without replacing the unit.
How often should a cooker hood be cleaned?
If you fry or stir-fry most days, have the hood professionally cleaned two to four times a year and wash the filters monthly. Lighter cooking can stretch that to once or twice a year.
Can grease filters go in the dishwasher?
Some aluminium mesh filters can, on a gentle cycle, but many discolour or come apart. Charcoal filters should never be washed. Our grease filter cleaning uses a soak that is safe for mesh and baffle filters.
Cooker hood dripping grease
Drips mean the canopy edge and filter channel are saturated. A deep clean removes the build-up; if the ducting above is also full of grease, that needs cleaning too or the drips come back.
Recirculating cooker hood still smells
A recirculating hood relies on charcoal filters to absorb cooking smells. Once they are saturated the smell comes straight back into the kitchen. Fresh carbon filters and a clean canopy fix it.
Restaurant extraction canopy cleaning
Commercial canopies, baffle filters and grease ducts load up far faster than a domestic hood and are a fire risk if neglected. We clean them out of hours so service isn't disrupted.
Why book a professional hood clean
Stronger extraction
Clean filters and a grease-free fan let the motor move the air it was designed to. Steam clears faster, windows mist up less and cooking smells stay out of the rest of the house.
Lower fire risk
Grease in a cooker hood and its ducting is flammable. A flare-up on the hob can ignite a saturated filter. Regular cleaning removes that fuel, which is why insurers and fire-risk assessments ask about it in commercial kitchens.
Safe for stainless and glass
Oven cleaner and abrasive pads etch stainless steel and cloud glass canopies. We use kitchen-safe degreasers and non-scratch tools, and we cover the hob and worktops before we start.
Clear, written quotes
Send a few photos of your hood and tell us whether it vents outside or recirculates. We reply with a written quote based on the hood type, how much grease has built up and whether any filters need replacing.
A photo of the underside of your hood is all we need to start.

How a cooker hood clean works
A typical domestic visit takes between one and three hours, depending on the hood and how much grease has built up.
01
Inspect and protect
We check the hood type, the filters and how it vents, switch off the power to the hood, and cover the hob, worktop and floor underneath.
02
Degrease and clean
Filters come out for a hot degreasing soak while we clean the canopy, light fittings, chimney and fan housing. Ducting and outside vents are cleaned where they can be reached.
03
Refit and test
Filters go back in, stainless steel is finished along the grain, and we run the hood on every speed to check airflow. You get a short note of anything that still needs attention.

Cooker hood cleaning FAQs
For a household that fries most days, two to four professional cleans a year with monthly filter washing keeps the hood working well. Lighter use can go six to twelve months between cleans.
Yes. We clean canopies, baffle filters and accessible ductwork in restaurants, takeaways, pubs, hotels and other commercial kitchens, usually out of hours.
Yes. We use food-safe, kitchen-grade degreasers, keep them away from food preparation surfaces and rinse every cleaned part before it goes back in.
You can wash mesh filters and wipe the outside regularly. The canopy underside, chimney joints, fan and ducting are harder to reach and are where most of the grease ends up, which is what a professional clean covers.
The price depends on the type and size of hood, how much grease has built up, access height and whether any filters need replacing. Send us the details and a photo and we'll send a written quote.
