Stainless steel cooker hoods look great when new but show every fingerprint, water mark and streak of grease. Once the wrong cleaner has been used, they can also look dull or patchy. Restoration brings back an even finish after the grease has been removed.
What's included
- Full degrease before any polishing
- Grain direction checked on every panel
- Water marks, smears and old polish residue removed
- Light swirl marks blended along the grain
- Stainless conditioner applied to resist fingerprints
- Glass and coated panels cleaned with suitable products
- Before and after check with you on any etching
Degrease first, then finish
We always degrease first. Polishing over grease just pushes it into the grain. Once the steel is clean, we work along the grain with a stainless steel cleaner and conditioner to remove smears and water marks and leave a uniform finish.
Etching, bleach marks and rust
Etching from oven cleaner, bleach marks and rust spots at chimney joints are damage to the steel itself. We can usually improve their appearance, and we'll show you what to expect before we start.
Range hoods and other finishes
Range hoods over range cookers and large professional-style hoods often have more stainless area and seams to work around. Glass, black and copper finishes are cleaned with products suitable for those materials.
How the visit works
01
Inspect the steel
We find the grain direction and check for etching, rust or scratches so you know what to expect.
02
Degrease
All grease is removed first so polishing does not push it into the grain.
03
Clean along the grain
Each panel is worked in the direction of the grain to remove smears and water marks.
04
Condition and buff
A thin coat of conditioner evens the finish and makes fingerprints easier to wipe away.
Common problems we fix
How to restore a dull stainless steel cooker hood
Remove all grease first, then clean and condition along the grain. Avoid scourers, oven cleaner and bleach, which dull the surface.
Scratches on a stainless steel chimney hood
Light swirl marks can be blended along the grain. Deep scratches that catch a fingernail can be softened but not removed.
Stopping fingerprints on a range hood
A stainless steel conditioner after cleaning reduces fingerprints and makes them easier to wipe away.
What affects the price
Restoration is priced on the size of the hood, the amount of stainless surface and seams, the condition of the steel and whether a full degrease is needed first. Photos taken in daylight from the side show the marks best.

For day-to-day care, use warm water with a little washing-up liquid on a microfibre cloth, wipe along the grain and dry straight away. Avoid oven cleaner, bleach, scourers and kitchen sprays containing chlorine, which dull and etch stainless steel.
Questions about Stainless Range Hood Restoration
If the steel is undamaged, it will look clean and even. Etched or rusted steel will look much better but may not match a new finish.
Yes, with cleaners suitable for glass and coated finishes.
Warm water with a little washing-up liquid, a microfibre cloth, and wipe along the grain. Dry it straight away to avoid water marks.
A standard clean includes a stainless finish. Restoration is a longer, more detailed finish for hoods that are clean but dull, streaky or marked.
